Amanda Weil is an artist based in New York City. Her longest running project, PicAnHr began in 1986, when Weil was a fellow at the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program. The cultural studies focus there turned her towards an experiment in time-based photography unbound from traditional aesthetic concerns. She decided to take a photograph every waking hour of one month each year. The result is this archive, defined by that single rule for forty years and counting: over 25,000 images, connected by time, aims to be less a personal diary and more a cultural record. It can be viewed myriad ways - by years, by hours, by days, or filtered by subjects that appear again and again. The archive doesn't assert meaning, so much as create the conditions under which some meaning might become legible through the rhythms and cycles that appear over time.
